Designing for Newsprint

When designing an ad for newsprint it is important to understand the strengths and limitations of the process. With this understanding, expectations will be inline with what is possible when printing cold web.

It Starts with Paper

The Arizona Journal of Real Estate & Business, with the exception of its glossy pages, on an uncoated sheet and consequently have a higher absorption and dot gain than coated sheets. Adhering to the following suggestions on what to avoid when creating your advertising will result in a better quality ad.

Pitfalls to avoid when designing files for printing:

• Avoid using rich blacks or four color blacks.
• Do not use 10 point san-serif type or 18 point serif of light sans fonts.
• Do not use any font under 10 point.
• Back to Back four color
• Large solid areas of color. (Keep total ink coverage below 260%)
• Colored type or graphic elements reproduce best when in two-color process. Add a third color for tone but never use all four.
